MOREHEAD CITYis seeking qualified and professional candidates for the position of Firefighter-Paramedic.

Firefighter-Paramedic employees perform intermediate protective service work responding to fire, rescue, and emergency medical service calls. Responsibilities include fire suppression, advanced life support (ALS), technical rescue operations, hazardous materials handling, station and equipment maintenance, public safety education, and ongoing training. These positions play a vital role in protecting the life, safety, and property of residents and visitors in Morehead City. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Fire/EMS Company Officer and does not include supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties Include (but are not limited to):

  • Responds to fire, rescue, EMS, and hazardous materials incidents.
  • Provides basic and advanced life support services, including patient assessment, stabilization, treatment, and coordination of pre-hospital care with physicians.
  • Performs technical rescue operations including high-angle, confined space, trench, water, boat, and wilderness rescue, as well as vehicle extrication.
  • Participates in fire suppression activities such as search and rescue, ventilation, salvage, and overhaul.
  • Operates and drives fire engines, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles; operates pumps and associated fire equipment.
  • Conducts pre-fire incident surveys and safety inspections of high-hazard structures and businesses.
  • Maintains station facilities, fire apparatus, ambulances, tools, and equipment to ensure operational readiness.
  • Prepares detailed incident reports, training records, and documentation for patient care quality assurance.
  • Presents public safety programs and participates in community education.
  • Participates in ongoing training, certifications, and professional development; assists with department training as needed.
  • Performs triage during mass casualty or large-scale incidents.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Ideal Candidates Will Have:

  • Thorough knowledge of emergency medical techniques, advanced life support, firefighting principles, and technical rescue procedures.
  • General knowledge of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression and hazardous materials response.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, prepare detailed written reports, and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Strong physical endurance and the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and in extreme conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with team members, other emergency service agencies, medical personnel, and the public.

Position Details:

This is a Full-Time position within the Morehead City Fire-EMS Department. This role involves physically demanding work in varied and often hazardous conditions, including firefighting, emergency medical response, and technical rescues. Employees must be able to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and operate in extreme weather and dangerous environments. The position requires shift work, including nights, weekends, holidays, and participation in an on-call rotation.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of North Carolina Firefighter Level I and II certifications.
  • Possession of a current North Carolina Paramedic credential or willingness to obtain.
  • Possession of Technical Rescue and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications.
  • Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina.

Salary Range:
