GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Professional firefighting/EMT duties of a varied nature specializing in rescue operations, emergency medical care of sick and injured people and firefighting work under the direction of superior officer. This person works with other Firefighter/EMT or First Responder and will supervise scene until an Officer arrives on the scene.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Responds to fire calls, lays, connects and places hose line in operation. Raises and climbs ladders. Enters building and other fire involved areas. Uses extinguisher, bars, hooks, lines, axes and other hand equipment. Ventilates burning buildings and structures. Throws salvage covers and removes debris.

  2. Responds to Emergency Medical calls, provides patient care and treatment, assists transport crew in patient care and provides patient reports with transfer of care.

  3. Makes regular inspections of apparatus and equipment and notifies supervisor of defects. Conducts routine maintenance and apparatus check-out as required.

  4. Drives and operates all rescue equipment as directed.

  5. Makes visual and physical inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards.

  6. Rescues and removes individuals from danger. Administers emergency medical treatment to sick, injured or afflicted persons.

  7. Makes periodic inspections of buildings to locate fire hazards, provides fire pre-planning and recommendations.

  8. Performs physical cleaning and maintenance tasks on department buildings and equipment using brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, etc. Performs hydrant maintenance.

  9. Attends training and drill sessions in such subjects as firefighting and inspection methods, equipment operations and emergency medical treatment.

  10. Trains volunteers, new employees, community education.

  11. Maintains reports and records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the street locations, geography and types of construction in the City. Knowledge of Emergency Medical procedures, practices and techniques. Knowledge of the various types of fire hazards of the City. Knowledge and skill in the use of emergency medical treatment practices. Knowledge of firefighting techniques, policies, procedures and practices. Ability to learn and perform many and varied firefighting techniques and procedures. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions. Ability to work at heights. Ability to drive fire apparatus over the road safely under emergency conditions. Skill in the use and maintenance of firefighting equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Completion of minimum standards as required by the State of Florida. Successful completion of all medical and fitness requirements. State Pump Operator preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:

Florida Certification as a Firefighter as authorized by F.S.S. 633. Florida certification as an EMT or Paramedic. Must possess a valid Class "D" Florida Driver's License with an "E" endorsement and a clean driving record. American Red Cross or American Heart Association CPR Card.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS AND ENVIRONMENT CONDITIONS:

  1. Visually and audibly checks emergency equipment. Checks vehicles for proper operations. Bends, stoops, leans, lifts, walks and uses manual dexterity to check gauges, levers, and other devices. Lifts hoses and 24 foot extension ladders from apparatus to clean, ladder weights up to 150 pounds and are lifted in a 2-person team.

  2. Travels by emergency vehicles to emergency situations. Ability to don fire protection equipment. Ability to enter structure by walking or crawling to access designated location. Ability to work in small confined spaces for extended periods of time to deliver care and help to citizens. Must be able to manually pull fire hoses from vehicle and advance to fire scene while holding hose with both hands. Will extinguish fire while inside structure by manually holding hose. Physical strength required to hold hose in place as hose can be under 150-200 pounds of pressure. Lifts, carries and raises ladders, usually in a 2-person team and climbs ladders, uses stairs, and steps to reach higher elevations to put out fires. Carries equipment such as axes and pike poles to clear pathways and access building to reach injured. When assisting injured inside structures, will assess situation and determine appropriate emergency treatment. Will physically remove citizens) by pulling, dragging and/or carrying. Involves lifting and using strength to remove citizens from hazardous situations.

  3. Takes and records vital signs. Patient care involves kneeling, bending, stooping and leaning using both hands and visually and audibly monitoring patient. Remains comfortable to work in small confined spaces for extended periods of time to deliver patient care.

  4. Fitness Program/Training Classes. Involves participating in conditioning exercises includes running, walking, weight lifting, bike riding and other cardiovascular fitness activities. Fitness program designed to maintain physical condition which enables fire fighter to safely perform physical demands of firefighting and rescuing citizens. This involves strength, agility and stamina while working in hazardous environments. Training involves some classroom instruction which employee will sit at conference tables or desk and manually record training information and read and comprehends various detailed training manuals. Participates in verbal classroom setting. Participates in drills such as carrying, advancing and laying of hose lines, lift, carries and raises ladders weighing up to 200 pounds in a 2-person team over distances up to 300 feet. Visually and audibly alert to complete drills in established procedures. Physical strength and stamina required to complete drills and manual dexterity. Walks, runs, bends, stoops, crawls, climbs ladders and climbs stairs, ramps to complete drills. Communicates clearly while performing drills.

Hazardous conditions: flames, fire, chemicals, smoke, heat, gases, moving vehicles, falling structures and debris, electricity, poor ventilation, poor lighting and related hazardous. Stressful situations and heights.

PRE EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL & TESTING:

After an offer of employment has been made, the successful candidate must submit to and pass a drug test as a condition of employment. In addition, the candidate must also submit to a physical examination that is designed around the performance criteria of this position.
