The Fire Lieutenant performs responsible fire suppression and incident response activities including operating fire apparatus and participating in firefighting; and may act in the absence of the Captain. An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression and incident response personnel and operations at the fire station. The employee participates in incident response, including emergency medical service, driving and operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response and mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incidence response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed.
Education and Experience: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in fire service supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of NIMS 100, 200, 700 and 800. Special Requirements: Must be able to work extended hours and shift work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is heavy work which requires work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Tasks may require the following abilities: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing. Requires mental acuity including the ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes, the ability to express ideas by means of the spoken word and have the visual acuityto size up the color, volume, and extent of fire involvement at fire scenes, to operate heavy fire apparatus in emergency situations, and to prepare records and reports. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments.The employee is subject to the hazards associated with incidence response work including working in inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold temperatures, loud noise, vibration, moving parts, high heat, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, wearing respirators, and working in close quarters. The employee is also subject to the final OSHA standards on blood borne pathogens.
