JOB DESCRIPTION

NATURE OF WORK

Firefighting requires skill in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires: answering emergency calls; and operating and maintaining fire department equipment, apparatus, and quarters.  The work involves extensive training activities.  Firefighters are required to learn and participate in operating apparatus and performing hazardous tasks under emergency conditions, all of which may require strenuous exertion under handicaps like smoke and cramped surroundings.  Although firefighting and rescue work are the most difficult and responsible areas of work, a significant portion of time is spent inspecting premises for fire hazards, pre-fire planning, and hydrant inspections.  Drilling and station duties round out the duties of the firefighter’s position.  In addition to firefighting, the fire service has recently entered a longer realm of public service, including handling incidents involving hazardous materials, heavy rescue work, and paramedic and ambulance service.
