The Stoughton Fire Department is looking for energetic individuals to fill entry-level volunteer positions. Volunteering with Stoughton Fire is a great way to support the local community or even prepare for a paid career in the fire and rescue service. We are looking for people from a wide age range and backgrounds. If you ever thought about becoming a firefighter, an EMT, or just helping in the community, now is your chance to make it happen!
Applicants must reside or work within the fire protection area served by the City of Stoughton Fire Department, including the City of Stoughton, the Town of Dunkirk, and parts of the Towns of Dunn, Rutland and Pleasant Springs.
Education, Training, Certifications & Experience - Must be 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license to meet City insurance requirements. - Must have a high school diploma or GED (General Educational Development) or be at least 18 (eighteen) years old and currently enrolled in high school. - Preferred two years of responsible work experience involving public interaction, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. - Vocational or technical training in fire science or a related field is preferred. - Must reside or work within the fire protection area served by the City of Stoughton Fire Department, which includes the City of Stoughton, the Town of Dunkirk, and portions of the Towns of Dunn, Rutland, and Pleasant Springs. - CPR-BLS (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - Basic Life Support) training and certification, and emergency vehicle operator training will be provided by the City. Conditions of Employment - Must successfully complete a background check, driver’s license verification, pre-employment physical, and drug screening.
Language Skills - Ability to analyze and categorize data and information in order to determine the relationship of the data with reference to established criteria/standards. Ability to compare, count,
Mathematical Skills - Ability to add and subtract, multiply and divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.
Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability - Ability to use functional reasoning and apply rational judgement in performing diversified work activities. - Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory and/or judgmental criteria.
Physical and Mental Abilities Required to Perform Essential Position Functions - Ability to operate equipment and machinery with some requiring complex and rapid adjustments, such as rescue tools, fire vehicles, breathing apparatus, ladders and hoses, ventilation fans, two-way radios, hazmat suit, water suit and hand tools. - Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing skilled movements. - Ability to exert moderately heavy physical effort in moderate to heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling extrication equipment, charged fire hoses, and other firefighting equipment. May also assist with patient lifts and moving victims with some weighing over 100 pounds. Ability to stand for prolonged periods while operating firefighting equipment and apparatus. - Ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, forms, sounds and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and ingredients. Ability to locate fire using sound, move through smoke-filled areas by feel.
