Position Overview: The Special Events Fire Inspector position is a specialized assignment within the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office (HCFMO) Prevention Bureau responsible for identifying, evaluating, inspecting, and documenting special events occurring throughout Harris County. The Special Events Team consists of inspectors operating on staggered schedules to provide seven-day coverage and support events occurring during normal business hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Special events present unique and rapidly changing fire and life-safety challenges. Inspectors assigned to this team must possess a strong working knowledge of the adopted International Fire Codes (IFC), applicable NFPA standards, operational permitting requirements, means of egress, occupant loads, tents and temporary structures, cooking operations, fire protection systems, emergency access, crowd management, flammable and combustible liquids, generators, temporary electrical installations, and other hazards commonly associated with temporary events.
Duties and Responsibilities: - Conduct Inspections: - Perform field inspections of festivals, fairs, concerts, sporting events, community events, temporary gatherings, markets, carnivals, large assembly events, and other special events within HCFMO jurisdiction. - Ensure quality, accuracy, and timely completion of assigned tasks, complaints process, including program management in accordance with HCFMO policies and procedures. - Proactively identify special events occurring throughout Harris County that may require an HCFMO operational permit, inspection, or fire and life-safety evaluation. This position requires inspectors to actively seek out events and potential compliance issues rather than relying solely on assigned inspections or permit applications. - Enforcement Compliance: - Investigate complaints so that complaint information is recorded, the complaint process is initiated, and the complaint is resolved, or forwarded to a supervisor when required. - Documentation and Reporting: - Perform administrative functions in accordance with policies and procedures, to include completing, reviewing and maintaining records and reports; and developing summary data reports, as required. - Training and Development: - Participate in training programs to enhance skills and maintain and/or pursue certifications in specific areas, such as project management, quality assurance, or technical specialties. Other Duties: - Perform as a member of an Incident Management Team during emergency or disaster situations. - Maintain situational awareness of all HCFMO activities. - Serve on committees, boards, or other teams as assigned by the Fire Marshal or designee. - Perform assigned tasks safely, and document and report initial accidents, injuries, or health exposures in accordance with accepted safety practices and HCFMO policy. - The duties listed above are not meant to limit the assignment of work, nor should they be construed as a complete list of the many duties normally performed, or as a list of all duties that may be performed temporarily outside an employee’s normal line of work.

"See Resume" ** will not be accepted for qualifications. ## Preferences - Current Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) Certification as a Basic Peace Officer or higher. - Current Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certification as a Fire Inspector I and II (Basic). - Current Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certification as a Fire Service Instructor. - Current Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Certification as a Fire Investigator. - Current International Code Council (ICC) Certification(s). - Current National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET) Certification(s). - If applicable, must successfully obtain the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Plans Examiner Certification within (1) year of employment. - Within one (1) year of appointment, provide proof of completion for NIMS IS-700, IS-800, IS-100, IS-200, ICS-300, ICS-400 ## General Information All FMO personnel are expected to maintain high standards of excellence when representing the department in any county-related activity. **

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:
This staggered schedule ensures that at least one Special Events employee is regularly scheduled every day of the week, with overlapping staffing during higher-demand periods. Supervisors may modify individual schedules, start/end times, or days off to accommodate scheduled events, evening or late-night operations, holidays, major events, or other operational requirements while maintaining the established workweek.
Salary:
Employment is contingent upon passing a background check and drug screen.
