**POSITION OVERVIEW: **
A Municipal Professional Firefighter is responsible for protecting life, property, and the environment through emergency response, fire suppression, emergency medical services, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, disaster preparedness, fire prevention, and public education. Employees perform skilled firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, and public service work while maintaining operational readiness through continuous training, equipment maintenance, and physical fitness. Work is performed under the direction of company officers and in accordance with departmental policies, standard operating guidelines, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITES: (GENERAL)
Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly and safely to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues, and other calls for service in residential and commercial areas.
- Perform fire suppression duties, including advancing hose lines, operating nozzles, and conducting search and rescue operations.
- Provide emergency medical care at the Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS) level as certified.
- Operate specialized firefighting and rescue equipment, including pumps, aerial devices, and extrication tools.
- Act as part of the incident command system, following orders and communicating effectively during emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Fire Prevention and Public Education:
- Conduct fire inspections and assist in enforcing local fire codes and safety regulations.
- Participate in community outreach programs, providing fire prevention education and safety training.
- Assist with pre-incident planning, including mapping buildings and identifying potential hazards.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Training and Development:
- Complete required annual continuing education.
- Maintain required certifications.
- Engage in advanced training to enhance skills and stay current with industry best practices.
- Participate in drills, simulations, continuing education, and other hands-on exercises for both operational and administrative.
- Completing appropriate paperwork for training received.
- Maintain physical fitness through regular exercise and wellness programs.
- Participate in promotional development.
- Participate in after-action reviews
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Equipment and Station Maintenance:
- Inspect, clean, test, and perform preventive maintenance on apparatus, equipment, tools, and facilities to ensure operational readiness. Identify deficiencies and report or correct minor maintenance issues as appropriate.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning interior and exterior of fire stations and living areas including minor landscaping needs.
- Report and document any equipment malfunctions or needed repairs.
- Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Administrative Duties:
- Complete detailed incident reports and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
- Attend departmental meetings and participate in other administrative functions.
- Maintain accurate electronic records.
- Complete NERIS reporting documentation as assigned.
- Maintain inventories.

MINIMUM EDUCATION:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively
- Ability to successfully complete departmental probation
- Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes in relation to firefighting skills.
WORK CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position is for a 24-hour shift, including weekends and holidays, with extended periods of physical exertion. The work is considered very heavy exerting over 100 pounds occasionally, 50-100 pounds frequently, or up to 20-50 pounds constantly. Physical demands will include, but not limited to standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, foot control, visual acuity, hearing, and talking. The worker is subject to situations immediately dangerous to life and health inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, chemicals, oils, and various other substances.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current North Carolina driver’s license with good driving record (must obtain class B, timeline determined by fire chief)
- Possession of N.C. Firefighter II Certification
- NIMS 100, 200, 700, 800
- Bloodborne Pathogens Training per department policy
- NC EMT-B or higher (ability to obtain Advanced-EMT within 3 years of hire date)
- TR-VMR within 12 months
- Wildland Firefighter S-130, S-190, and L-180 (able to obtain within one year of hire date)
- Driver/Operator Pumps and Aerials preferred
- Ability to obtain other certifications as required by the Town, including but not limited to SCBA Qualification and FDTN Live Fire Camp within two (2) years of hire date
