** ** POSITION:                 Firefighter   DEPARTMENT:         Fire Department   HOURS:                      24-Hour Shift On-Duty/48-Hour Off-Duty   PAY GRADE:             $42,098   REQUISITION: **         ** 2026019-5   GENERAL PURPOSE:  To participate in classroom and practical training in the performance of a wide variety of technical tasks in support of the fire prevention and suppression, medical emergency, and hazardous materials handling functions; to learn the operation and maintenance of a variety of fire and rescue apparatus and equipment; and to participate in fire prevention and station and equipment maintenance activities. This is the entry-level/recruit classification. This class is distinguished from Firefighter II by the primary assignment to training activities and by the performance of the most routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this classification. Employees in this class typically work under immediate supervision and are trained to meet the State of Mississippi's Minimum Standards for Firefighters.
