Job Description

Tasks

• Positions and climbs ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings, or to rescue individuals from burning structures.
• Creates openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using axe, chisel, crowbar, electric saw, or core cutter.
• Selects hose nozzle, depending on type of fire, and directs stream of water or chemicals onto fire.
• Protects property from water and smoke, using waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants.
• Administers first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.
• Responds to fire alarms and other emergency calls.
• Assesses fire and situation, reports to superior, and receives instructions, using two-way radio.
• Establishes firelines to prevent unauthorized persons from entering area.
• Drives and operates fire fighting vehicles and equipment.

About the Roselle Fire Department and Village of Roselle

Roselle is a suburb of Chicago and is a village located in both DuPage County and Cook in Illinois. Roselle was first incorporated in 1922 as a bedroom community, with its train stop attracting residents commuting to Chicago or nearby suburbs for their jobs. As of the 2020 census, the village's population was 22,897. 

The Roselle Fire Department includes senior staff made up of the Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, three (3) Battalion Chiefs, Fire Marshal, EMS Coordinator and on-duty personnel consisting of three (3) Lieutenants, twelve (12) Firefighter/Paramedics, twenty (20) Part-Time Firefighter/EMT-B/Paramedics, and six (6) Civilian Paramedics. The Roselle Fire Department operates as part of the West Suburban Fire Rescue Alliance (WSFRA). The WSFRA consists of 8 departments that have adopted common SOG’s, trains together multiple times monthly and operates as a functionally consolidated department on the scene of incidents. The Roselle Fire Department also exclusively provides services to the Roselle Fire Protection District. The Roselle Fire Protection District covers portions of unincorporated DuPage and Cook Counties, a portion of the Village of Itasca and a portion of Medinah. The Roselle Fire Department’s initial response area is approximately 10 square miles, 35,000 residents and responds to over 3,600 calls annually.

• In addition to the online application, applicants must *mail/ship or hand deliver required documents: ** copy of high school diploma or GED; copy of valid driver's license; copy of birth record as proof of U.S. Citizenship; copy of CPAT and ladder climb certificates; copy of valid IDPH EMT- Basic license, IDPH Paramedic license, or proof of enrollment in an IDPH Paramedic Program; Copy Illinois Firefighter II or Basic Operations Firefighter Certificate issued by the OSFM (required if not currently a licensed IDPH Paramedic).

Maple Ave. Roselle, IL 60172 - Testing Exam Information Candidates must attend the mandatory written exam on 10/24/2026 at the Roselle Fire Department’s training room (lower level). No late admittance: Please arrive no later than 8:00 a.m. with a photo ID (driver’s license, state ID) and #2 pencil. Instructions will begin promptly at 8:00a.m. Testing should be finished by approximately 1:00p.m. Additional information about the test will be provided via email after the application period closes. - Interview Information Candidates that successfully pass the written exam will be invited to attend an oral interview at a later date. Exact details for the oral interviews will be provided for those eligible.

=The following documents are accepted as proof of citizenship: Copy of U.S. County/State issued birth certificate, Copy of valid U.S. Passport, Copy of Naturalization Papers. Hospital-issued birth certificates are not* verifiable and therefore cannot be accepted.

Minimum Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship.
• Valid driver’s license. Illinois license required at time of hire.
• Must possess one of the following at time of application :
• Valid Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) EMT-Basic Certification and Office of the State Fire Marshal (OSFM) Basic Operations Firefighter (BOF) Certificate.
• Currently enrolled in a recognized IDPH Paramedic Program and OSFM BOF Certificate.
• Valid IDPH Paramedic License.
• 21 to 35 years of age by date of hire unless otherwise exempt by State statute
• Valid CPAT and Ladder Climb dated no earlier than 10/4/2025. CPAT/Ladder Climb certifications must also be valid at the time of hire (12 months prior to date of hire).
• At the time of hire, you must be currently enrolled in a recognized IDPH Paramedic Program and hold your BOF Certificate OR possess a valid IDPH Paramedic License.
