The Sea Breeze Fire District is an all-volunteer fire district serving the hamlet of Sea Breeze on the northeast side of the Town of Irondequoit, New York, in Monroe County just north of Rochester. The district covers about half a square mile and roughly 1,500 residents, an area that takes in the Irondequoit Bay boat launch and part of the Seabreeze amusement district. Members train in water rescue and, in winter, ice rescue, reflecting the rise in boat-launch traffic and water emergencies on the bay.
The district has operated from a single station at 4657 Culver Road since 1920. The building was expanded in 2006 and houses two engines, a squad and an administrative vehicle. The front-line fleet is a 2020 Pierce Enforcer engine (Engine 194) and a 2007 E-One engine (Engine 195). The firehouse and grounds belong to the Sea Breeze Volunteer Fire Association, a separate entity from the fire district.
After years of unsuccessful recruitment, the district's Board of Fire Commissioners approved a plan on September 22, 2026 to dissolve the district. Point Pleasant Fire District has covered all Sea Breeze fire and rescue calls since October 2022 and medical calls since July 2026, and the district ended its basic life support ambulance on July 1, 2026, with Irondequoit Ambulance now handling patient transport. A public hearing on the dissolution plan is set for October 29, 2026 at 6:00 PM at the Culver Road station. If approved, the district dissolves October 31 and Point Pleasant assumes full responsibility for fire, rescue and medical response in the Sea Breeze area on November 1, 2026. The district has said staffing, not finances, drove the decision.
MissionWe are more than a fire district; we are a family helping other families in their time of need.
As of October 2026 the Sea Breeze Fire District is not recruiting. The dissolution plan was prompted by an inability to attract enough volunteers to staff the district, and from November 1, 2026 the Sea Breeze area is expected to be served by the Point Pleasant Fire District, a combination district of volunteers and part-time paid firefighters based at 257 Kings Highway North in Irondequoit.
Anyone interested in volunteering in this part of Irondequoit should contact Point Pleasant Fire District directly (585-342-9140, info@pointpleasantfd.org, pointpleasantfd.org).
Who responds to emergencies in Sea Breeze now?
Point Pleasant Fire District has answered all fire and rescue calls in the Sea Breeze area since October 2022 and has handled medical calls alongside Sea Breeze volunteers since July 2026. Irondequoit Ambulance provides basic and advanced life support care and hospital transport; Point Pleasant's New York State certified EMTs respond as medical first responders.
Will fire taxes change for Sea Breeze residents after the dissolution?
The district says the 2026 fire protection tax rates for Sea Breeze and Point Pleasant are very similar. It expects little change in the 2027 rate under Point Pleasant, with a possible slight decrease in tax expense.
What happens to the firehouse at 4657 Culver Road?
The property and buildings are owned by the Sea Breeze Volunteer Fire Association, Inc., not the fire district, and the Association's membership keeps ownership after the district dissolves. The Association is expected to keep hosting its community events, including the holiday parade, turkey raffle and chicken barbecues.
