About Point Pleasant Fire District

The Point Pleasant Fire District covers the northeast corner of the Town of Irondequoit, New York, in Monroe County just north of Rochester: north of Titus Avenue, east of Oakview Drive, west of Irondequoit Bay and south of Sweet Fern Road, with the smaller Sea Breeze district tucked inside its northern edge. The district says it serves about 2,600 residents; a 2021 consultant study of Irondequoit's fire districts put its territory at roughly 2.7 square miles. Waterfront neighborhoods see a seasonal rise in population and visitors in the warmer months.

The district provides fire protection, emergency medical first response and fire police services with more than 50 active members. It is a combination department: volunteers backed by part-time paid firefighters who provide daytime and evening coverage. Members work to NFPA and NHTSA guidelines. In 2025 the district answered 598 calls, 260 fire and 339 EMS.

Point Pleasant operates from two stations. Station 1 at 55 Ewer Avenue stands on the site of the original 1918 firehouse; the current building was finished in May 1962, largely by department members, and holds a three-bay apparatus room, dispatch room, offices and a banquet hall. Station 2 at 257 Kings Highway North was built in 1957 on 13.5 acres and expanded in 1983, with four apparatus bays, a training classroom and the Robert McGrail Training Facility behind it. The fleet is two Class A engines, a mini attack pumper, a heavy rescue and a squad utility vehicle.

The Point Pleasant Firemen's Association formed on March 10, 1915 after a house fire exposed the need for organized fire protection, received its charter in 1916, built its first firehouse at Point Pleasant Road and Ewer Avenue in 1917 and bought its first motorized rig, a Ford Model T, in 1919. The Board of Fire Commissioners and the fire district with its present boundaries date from 1923.

Since October 2022 Point Pleasant has answered all fire and rescue calls for the neighboring Sea Breeze Fire District, adding its medical calls in July 2026. Under a dissolution plan approved by the Sea Breeze board in September 2026 and subject to a public hearing on October 29, 2026, Point Pleasant is expected to take full responsibility for the Sea Breeze area on November 1, 2026.

How to get hired

Point Pleasant is built on volunteers: its roster includes firefighters, station support personnel and part-time paid staff, and the district also fields fire police. The part-time paid firefighter positions cover daytime and evening hours when volunteer turnout is thinnest.

The district's website does not publish a membership application or requirements. As of October 2026, prospective volunteers or part-time applicants should contact the district directly at 585-342-9140 or info@pointpleasantfd.org. With the Sea Breeze dissolution expected on November 1, 2026, Point Pleasant also becomes the department to contact for anyone wanting to volunteer in the Sea Breeze neighborhood.

Benefits

A 2021 consultant study of Irondequoit's fire districts reported that Point Pleasant supports and retains its volunteers with a LOSAP service award program, a discounted LA Fitness membership and regular social events.
