The Livingston Fire Department serves the City of Livingston, an agricultural and food-processing hub in Merced County's San Joaquin Valley. The department delivers emergency medical response, fire suppression, and fire prevention through inspections and public education, organized into three commands: Administration, Emergency Response, and Prevention and Investigation.
The city runs a single fire station, known as Station 96, which has long housed both city and Merced County apparatus. A department report from 2018 described one full-time firefighter on duty per day supplemented by volunteer firefighters, and 1,625 emergency calls in 2017, about 58 percent of them medical. Hazardous materials, technical rescue, and aircraft rescue and firefighting responses have been handled through an agreement with the Merced County Fire Department, and a 2014 ISO review rated the city Class 4 for public protection.
The department is now rebuilding as a city-run service. In November 2024, Livingston voters approved Measure L, a citywide one percent sales tax projected to generate roughly $2.3 million a year exclusively for police and fire purposes, including maintaining and staffing Station 96. The city has since established full-time career ranks of Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Lieutenant, and Fire Captain within its Fire Services department.
