Requirements at a glance

Prior felony convictionsDisqualifying

The Pedernales Fire Department (Travis County ESD 8) accepts firefighter applications on a continuous basis. Completed applications are reviewed and kept on file for one year — qualified applicants are contacted to proceed through the hiring process when the department's next hiring cycle opens.

How it works

  • Complete the application for testing on the department's recruitment page.
  • Read each question and all instructions carefully; enter N/A where a question does not apply. Applications are judged in part on neatness, spelling, and completeness, and incomplete applications are not accepted.
  • Your application stays on file for one year. If you qualify for an open position, the department will contact you to continue through the hiring process.

Automatic disqualifiers

Read the full list on the department's recruitment page before applying — any of the following disqualifies an applicant at any stage of the process. If you are unsure whether one applies to you, the department requires a detailed letter explaining the circumstances.

Criminal history — including: any felony conviction, indictment, or pending charge; any Class A or B misdemeanor conviction, indictment, or pending charge within the past 5 years; a DWI/DUI conviction within the past 5 years (or more than one ever, or a pending charge); currently serving community supervision or probation for any offense. Deferred adjudication and probated sentences count as convictions.

Driving record — an excessive record of traffic convictions or negligent collisions: involvement as a driver in two or more accidents in the past 3 years where your actions contributed; more than two moving-violation convictions in the past 3 years; or a license suspension in the past 3 years (DWI, no liability insurance, or other poor-driving reasons).

Military discharge — a dishonorable discharge, or a general discharge indicating bad conduct or bad character.

Drug use — illegal marijuana use within the past 3 years; illegal use of any other controlled substance within the past 3 years; or a police record of illegal drug use or furnishing drugs to another.

General — membership in organizations advocating the violent overthrow of government or engaging in hate-motivated unlawful conduct; any false or deceptive statement in the application or hiring process.
