Brief Job Description: This position is responsible for responding to fires, medical emergencies, and other emergency situations to protect lives and property. Duties include fire suppression, rescue operations, providing emergency medical services, operating and maintaining firefighting equipment, and conducting fire prevention and public education activities. Firefighters also participate in ongoing training, fire safety inspections, and station maintenance. This position requires the ability to work effectively as part of a team, remain calm under pressure, and perform physically demanding duties in emergency situations.
**Vacancy: ** This examination is being held to establish an eligible list to fill future vacancies which may occur during the life of the eligible list. An eligible may receive only one permanent appointment from this list. Once appointed, there will be a probationary period of 8-78 weeks based on performance of duties.
Residency Requirements to Participate in the Examination: Candidates must be legal residents of Genesee, Erie, Livingston, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans or Wyoming County at the time of examination and for at least two months prior to the date of the examination.
Candidates must continue their residency through the period leading to their initial appointment. Eligible residents of a civil division may be given preference in appointment in their area of residency.
**Minimum Qualifications & Special Requirements: ** Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants within 12 months of meeting this requirement may be eligible to take the Civil Service examination.
At the time of appointment, candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License and EMT-Basic certification or higher. Candidates must also meet applicable medical and physical fitness standards, successfully complete a psychological evaluation, and complete required Fire Academy training. EMT certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Starting Salary: $60,760 per year (2027), City of Batavia
