VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTER
NATURE OF WORK
Under direct supervision, responds in and out of the City and at the airport to fire alarms and other emergency calls as requested by the officer in charge to protect life and property; drives and operates pumping engines, ambulances and similar fire protection and emergency automotive equipment; participates in fire prevention, public events, and training activities.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
Responds to alarms and emergency calls and assists at the fire ground in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work.
Operates equipment and otherwise assists in the suppression of fires and in the protection of life and property; drives ambulance or emergency unit in responding to emergencies or in transport of patients; administers CPR and first aid; after the fire has been extinguished, performs cleanup and overhaul work.
Assists in maintaining and supplying fire apparatus and equipment; participates in continuing training and instruction programs by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes relating to firefighting subjects and techniques, hazardous materials, and first aid; subject to callback; responds to major alarms and disasters.
Performs other work which is consistent with the essential elements of the job.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of elementary physics, chemistry and mechanics.
Knowledge of NIMS 100, 200 and 700.
Ability to learn technical firefighting, fire/crash/rescue and EMT principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
Mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility.
Ability to react promptly and arrive at logical conclusions in emergency situations.
Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other employees, supervisors, officials and the public.
Ability to develop, perform and maintain Firefighter I skills as outlined in NFPA 1001.
Ability to develop, perform and maintain Firefighter Apparatus Driver/Operator skills as outlined in NFPA 1002.
Ability to develop, perform and maintain Wildland Firefighter skills as outlined in NFPA 1051.
Ability to develop, perform and maintain Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations skills as outlined in NFPA 472.
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Any combination of experience and training equivalent to graduation from high school.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver’s license; twenty-one years of age; ability to meet standards as to age, height, weight and physical conditions established by the appointing authority.
