About the Position

Do you want to play an important role in protecting the life and property of the people of Saint Paul? We’re looking for a Fire Buildings Repairer to join the Saint Paul Fire Department. Having a good overall maintenance or construction background will help you to troubleshoot many different types of needs within the department such as HVAC, garage door, and appliance repair.

Here’s what you can expect to do:

  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair work of building structures, heating/air conditioning/plumbing systems, equipment, machinery, appliances, furniture and fixtures. 
  • Maintains and operates a Building Automation System (BAS).
  • Fabricates equipment parts from raw stock such as special sheet metal ducts, metal frames, racks and shelving, signs, cabinets, tools, equipment boxes, and training equipment. 
  • Operates equipment such as snow blowers, snowplows, forklifts, and lawn mowers to maintain facilities.
  • Maintains appropriate records on boilers, work orders, inventory, etc. 
  • Reads and interprets shop drawings, diagrams, maintenance manuals, and blueprints. 
  • Provides assistance to and coordinates the work of contractors, trades, maintenance, and other department staff.

    **Information Specific to this Position: ** This position works out of the Fire Maintenance Shop, at 676 Bedford St. Saint Paul, but conducts repair work at multiple fire buildings. Works alongside trades staff including a painter and carpenter, as well as another Fire Buildings Repairer. The typical working schedule is 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on site, with no remote work available.

    Position Requirements

    • Must possess a Special Engineer Boiler License.
  • Two years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of building structures and mechanical equipment. 
  • Must possess a Type I and II Refrigeration Technician Certification approved by the Environmental Protection Agency within six months of the date of appointment

  • Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D Driver's License or equivalent out-of-state driver's license.
