Position Purpose/Summary

  • Please note that this is a Civil Service position. This position is not currently open, should there become an opening we will hire off of the list of applicants starting with the oldest application date. *     APPLICATION FOR CITY OF SPRINGFIELD LABOR SERVICE   Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of filing application. Incomplete applications will not be processed. The name of an applicant will remain on the Labor Service register for the job title which he or she is registered for a period of not more than 5 years from the date of registration, subject to a renewal of registration as provided in Section 28, Chapter 31 of the General Laws, and subject to compliance with other applicable provisions of the Civil Service law and rules.

Responsible for the application of skills and knowledge in repairing and maintaining fire apparatus, equipment, and tools.  Work is performed alongside current repairmen and under the supervision of the Fire Repair Supervisor.  Work assignments are ordinarily oral and may be accompanied by sketches or blueprints with inspection during process and upon completion.  Work assignments will likely require reading and understanding the use of service manuals.  No supervision is exercised over other employees.

Essential Functions

  • Perform automotive type repair and maintenance work on fire apparatus and support vehicles.- Assist Fire Apparatus Repairmen with major apparatus repairs.- Perform repairs on lawn mowers, snow blowers and other small engine equipment.- May repair and maintain firefighting equipment, such as chain saws, pumps, pike poles, axes, nozzles, fire hose, etc. - Operates, repairs, and maintains shop equipment, such as, drill press, band saw, grinder, oxygen / acetylene torches and welding equipment.- Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques, materials, and tools used in repairing and maintaining standard motor vehicles.- Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.- Ability to locate, diagnose, and correct defects and malfunctions in standard motor vehicles.- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.- Ability to work with others and follow direction from a supervisor.- Skill in the use and care of tools employed in all phases of the work.

Education and Experience

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.- Must possess a valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.- Must have graduated from a vocational type school in an automotive shop.
