CIVILIAN PARAMEDIC 2026

GENERAL PURPOSE

The Civilian Paramedic serves as the principal hands-on labor in performing duties in both emergency and non-emergency situations related to emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, advanced life support medical care, and emergency management delivery. ## ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Responds to an emergency based on dispatch instructions.

2. Drives PFT Ambulances and pool vehicles in compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, and department rules and regulations.

3. Dons and doffs the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with department standard operating guidelines.

4. Reports to the Incident Commander for assignment of duties and maintains the appropriate communications and accountability throughout the incident.

5. Assists with determining the best route in responding to all emergent and non-emergent calls.

6. Ensures proper operational status of assigned apparatus equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) before, during, and after an incident.

7. Implements and utilizes the Incident Command System.

8. Maintains familiarization with the response area.

9. Properly uses department communication technologies (radio, phone, and computer).

10. Climbs multiple flights of stairs while carrying equipment, or a patient.

11. Provides patient care to patients entrapped in a motor vehicle or machinery.

12. Establishes scene safety zones.

13. Isolates and secures energy sources.

14. Conducts CO atmospheric monitoring of the environment.

15. Performs forcible entry operations.

16. Assesses, triages, and treats victims at an incident scene within the scope of one’s certification and/or licensures.

17. Establishes medical, triage, rehabilitation, or other sectors as assigned by the Incident Commander.

18. Packages and transports victims to a local medical facility.

19. Communicates with victims, family members, by-standers, and members of the public at the scene of an incident.

20. Cleans, inspects, and maintains all emergency response equipment.

21. Maintains department equipment, apparatus, and facilities and effectively communicates problems or concerns with such to superior officers and/or maintenance personnel.

22. Conducts daily inspections of all EMS equipment.

23. Checks drug expiration dates monthly.

24. Participates in all required department training, meetings, and activities.

25. Completes all required written and/or electronic communications.

26. Complies with all department safety guidelines while performing emergency and nonemergency functions.

27. Complies with all department rules and regulations, standard operating guidelines, and Town policies, as applicable.

28. Presents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topics.

Education and/or Experience: ** High school diploma or general education degree (GED); The following certifications are required: Licensed as a Paramedic, BLS CPR, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications are required.  ## NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES Other Skills and Abilities: ** The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

• Computer software skills required to operate all applicable PFT computer programs.
• A working knowledge of structure and function of the Fire Territory, local and county governments, local, state and federal laws effective employment practices, budgeting, funding, and emergency service organizations.
• A working knowledge of all Fire Territory policies, procedures, rules and regulations is required.
• A comprehensive knowledge of the geography of the Town and County is required.

• A working knowledge of the following is required:

• Public education programs.

• Emergency medical procedures.
• Communication systems and procedures.
• Budgeting, purchasing, and planning procedures.
• Emergency vehicle operations.
• Response areas.
• Applicable federal, state, and local laws governing the operation of department vehicles.
• Safe use, care and maintenance of all medical equipment.
• Performing scene size-up.
• Current Hendricks Regional Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) protocols.

• Haz-Mat operations.

• The ability to operate all Fire Territory EMS and pool vehicles are required.

• The ability to use all Fire Territory EMS equipment, tools, personal protective equipment (PPE), and apparatus is required.
• The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.
• The ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocols and guidelines is required.
• The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationship with residents, vendors and other Town departments is required.
• Wears proper duty uniform and maintains a neat personal appearance in compliance with department rules and regulations.
• Assists with recordkeeping and maintenance requisition of apparatus.
• Maintains the department’s equipment, apparatus and facilities.
• Orients and assess new personnel in accordance with guidelines established by the Medical Director.
• Assumes leadership roles and responsibilities at the request of a superior officer.
• The ability to remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
• The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
• The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is exposed to working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); working near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather); risk of electrical shock; and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to working in hazardous conditions to include electrical hazards, traffic hazards, and chemical, biological and radiological hazards. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.

This position requires a rotating schedule of 24 hours on duty, followed by 48 hours off duty and is eligible for overtime compensation after a 40-hour work week. Other schedules may be assigned for special duty. It also requires the ability to drive Fire Territory EMS vehicles. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required
