GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Department protects people, property, and the environment from damage due to unexpected circumstances. Fire Fighters are expected to advance into the emergency scene and take appropriate actions, often at considerable personal risk, to mitigate the situation at hand. Operating under the supervision of and alongside Fire Officers, they are the front line workers actually performing the manual tasks necessary to accomplish such objectives as extinguishing fires, extracting trapped and injured persons, and stemming the flow of spilled or leaking and hazardous chemicals. At times, firefighting is extremely difficult and dangerous work; performed in adverse conditions of weather and surroundings, without the benefits of standard breaks or lunch hours.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Dragging charged hose lines upstairs and into buildings.
- Carrying and raising heavy extension ladders (climbing and working on same).
- Rescuing persons from burning vehicles or buildings.
- Searching and working on hands and knees in high heat, smoke, and total darkness.
- Carrying heavy objects or unconscious persons up and down stairs and ladders.
- Driving and operating emergency apparatus, including pumpers and aerial ladder trucks.
- Understanding water flow hydraulics and correctly utilizing equipment.
- Learning fire science hazardous materials chemistry, building construction.
- Wearing and use of respiratory protection; primarily self-contained breathing apparatus.
- Inspecting and performing routine maintenance of all firefighting and rescue equipment and apparatus.
- Operation of telephones, radios, alarm systems, and recorders.
- Making appropriate entries into logs, records, and other official documents.
- Maintenance of stations and grounds; including janitorial and yard work.
- Enter and retrieve data from computer.
- Successful attendance and performance of classroom and practical skills training sessions.
- Wear and maintain protective firefighting gear and dress uniforms.
- Staying afloat and performing water rescue operations.
- Maintain body and self in top physical shape; muscularly and cardio vascularly.
- Reports of emergency callback during off-duty hours.
- Perform public education classes, inspect buildings for code and compliance, assist with training classes for new recruits.
- Attend fire service related classes, demonstrations, seminars, and equipment shows.
- Maintain memberships in fire service organizations.
- Use of computer terminals to enter and obtain stored data.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs):
- Must have physical dexterity.
- Need to have good mechanical aptitude.
- Must have ability to be trained in technical and motor skill subjects, both cognitively and didactically.
- Must be capable of spatial orientation in maze-like situations.
- Must have the ability to get along with and maintain trusting relationships with co-workers while living for long shifts in tight quarters.
- Must have the ability to successfully acquire an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate within 1 year of date of hire.
- Must have the ability to successfully acquire a Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license with a “Q” endorsement (Q = Fire Apparatus)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proof of high school diploma or equivalent.
- Possess State of Connecticut Fire Fighter 1 certification

Possess proof of graduation as a Certified Fire Fighter Recruit from Connecticut Fire Academy between June 7, 2024 through December 7, 2025.
- Complete successful recruit oral interview with the City of Torrington.
- Possess and maintain in good standing a current Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license with a “Q” endorsement pursuant to acquisition timeline described in KSAs
- Must be a non-smoker and remain a non-smoker so as a condition of employment.
- Must be capable of being medically certified by a City of Torrington physician to wear respiratory protection and perform interior structural firefighting.
- Possess and maintain in good standing a current Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificate pursuant to acquisition timeline described in KSAs
- Must not have fear of heights, confined spaces, or darkness as determined by actual observations of activities while in such places.
- Must be capable of staying afloat in water without assistance of any person or device, per departmental standards.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Proof of associate’s degree in fire technology preferred.
- Proof of completing two (2) years of technical college work in a related field preferred.
- Proof of hazardous materials operations level certification preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to regularly sit at a desk, stand, walk, handle small items with fingers, reach with hands and arms, speak, hear, differentiate colors and work continuously for extended periods of time.
- Demonstrated ability to walk/traverse over variable terrain, e.g., rocky, steep, and swampy, as needed.
- Demonstrated ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds occasionally without assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to climb ladders, stand, crawl, lift, pull, and carry apparatus, supplies, and equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of operational and administrative equipment involving fire and rescue vehicles, fire, rescue, and communication equipment.
- Demonstrated proficiency using standard office equipment, desktops, mobile devices, etc.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Perform public education classes, inspect buildings for code and compliance
- Assist with training classes for new recruits.
- Attend fire service related classes, demonstrations, seminars, and equipment shows.
- Maintain memberships in fire service organizations.
- Demonstrate ability to use computer terminals to enter and obtain stored data effectively.
