DEFINITION ** To provide basic medical care and transport of the ill and injured to hospitals or other emergency care facilities; to respond to a variety of emergency and non-emergency service; to participate in community risk reduction and public education activities; station and equipment maintenance; and to perform a variety of other duties relative to assigned area of responsibility. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is a non-safety/non-firefighter position that works under the supervision of a Fire Captain to perform emergency and non-emergency medical treatment and transport services. WORK PERIOD In general, Emergency Medical Technicians will work a rotating shift schedule that will accommodate the fire department's 24/7 operations. To the extent required by federal and state labor laws and/or regulations, the City agrees to provide the Emergency Medical Technicians with overtime pay based upon a 40-hour work week. As FLSA "non-exempt" employees, Emergency Medical Technicians shall receive overtime pay for hours worked over forty (40) hours in a work week at time and one half of the time Emergency Medical Technicians FLSA regular rate of pay. ## Essential Duties and Responsiblities ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MARGINAL FUCNTION STATEMENT: _Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: _ _ _ Essential Functions: 1. Responds to emergency and non-emergency medical calls for service and provides basic life support functions as indicated. 2. Assists Paramedics in delivering medical care. 3. Documents and completes all reports such as, pre-hospital care reports, incident reports, travel information, and training and continuing education records. 4. Maintains records and logs of work completed and in-progress. 5. Participates in the delivery of emergency and non-emergency medical and health care. 6. Transport’s patients and staff to/from medical facilities in a safe, timely manner. 7. Completes mechanical checklist for vehicle at the start/end of each shift. 8. Stays current on new innovations relative to community risk reduction and emergency medical services. 9. Gives informative and educational tours of the fire station to school children and other citizens; explains the functions of the Fire department; participates in other public relations activities. 10. Supports and assists other fire and medical personnel as directed on medical calls. 11. Performs community risk reduction inspections and pre-incident planning. 12. Performs decontamination procedures in compliance with CalOSHA regulations. 13. In the event of a major emergency, may be called in from off duty to work an extended period of time. 14. Studies and keeps up to date on City geography, department rules, regulations, procedures and other training and job-related materials. 15. Maintains medical information in a confidential manner subject to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 16. **RETIREMENT ** The California Public Employees' Pension Reform Act (PEPRA), which took effect in January 2013, changes the way CalPERS retirement and health benefits are applied, and places compensation limits on members. The greatest impact is felt by new CalPERS members.
As defined by the PEPRA, a new member includes:
-A member who joined CalPERS prior to January 1, 2013, who, on or after January 1, 2013, is hired by a different CalPERS employer following a break in service of more than six months.
-A new hire who joined CalPERS for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in another California public retirement system.
-A new hire who joins CalPERS for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who was a member of another California public retirement system prior to that date, but who is not subject to reciprocity upon joining CalPERS.
All members who don't fall into the definitions above are considered classic members. Classic members will retain the existing benefit enrollment levels for future service with the same employer.
According to the Rialto Professional Firefighters Local 3688 Memorandum of Understanding, in addition to the monthly salary, the City offers:
RETIREMENT benefits are provided to City employees by the Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS), at 2.7% at age 55 formula for classic PERS members and 2% at age 62 formula for new PERS members. Classic PERS employees pay 8% toward the employee portion and new PERS members pay 6.75% toward they employee portion.
CAFETERIA PLAN City’s contribution to the Cafeteria Plan is $1,950 to go towards the employee’s contributions for Health, Vision, and Dental insurance premiums for each employee of the unit.
LIFE INSURANCE provides a $70,000 double indemnity policy for employee plus dependent coverage ($10,000 for spouse and $5,000 dependent children)
MERIT RAISES may be received in the form of salary increases four times within or in four years with the attainment of satisfactory work performance.
BILINGUAL PAY is paid ($100 per pay period) to employees who successfully pass the bilingual proficiency examination for Spanish.
VACATION 40-hours/week employees hours per pay period: 0-1 Years 80 hours (end of probation) 1-4 Years 6 hours 5-10 Years 7.5 hours 11-16 Years 9.5 hours 17+ Years 10.5 hours
56-hours/week employees hours per pay period: 0-1 Years 112 hours (end of probation) 1-4 Years 8.4 hours 5-10 Years 10.5 hours 11-16 Years 13.3 hours 17+ Years 14.7 hours
SICK LEAVE is accumulated at the rate of ten (10) hours per month for 40-hour/week personnel and fourteen (14) hours per month for 56-hour/week personnel. This amounts to 120 hours per year for 40-hours/week employees and one hundred sixty-eight (168) hours per year for 56-hour/week employees.
SPORTS CENTER usage has been made available; at no cost, to all employees as set forth in the usage guidelines. The facilities include weight room, racquetball and tennis courts, pool, sauna, and jacuzzi.

AGENCY SHOP: Union dues or service fees are mandatory as a condition of employment for employees who are in classifications which are covered by Agency Shop provisions. Qualified religious objection can be accommodated.
EMERGENCY SERVICE: All City employees are required to perform assigned Emergency Service duties in the event of an emergency or disaster.
