About Jackson Hole Fire/EMS

Jackson Hole Fire/EMS was formed in 2004 when the Town of Jackson and Teton County signed a Joint Powers Agreement to consolidate a patchwork of independent volunteer fire stations and a hospital-based ambulance service into a single, unified department. Today it covers roughly 4,200 square miles of Teton County out of six fire stations, two of which are staffed by career personnel, and it regularly coordinates response with the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and Wyoming State Forestry given how much of the valley borders federal and state land.

As of Q2 2025 the department counted 123 members: 27 career staff, 75 volunteers, six chief officers, two medical directors, and 13 people in administration, prevention, and emergency coordination. The apparatus fleet includes Type 1 engines at each station, 3,000-gallon tenders, Type 3 and Type 6 wildland units, rescue trucks, a 100-foot aerial ladder, HazMat units, and five advanced-life-support transport ambulances, backed by 50-patient mass casualty trailers for large incidents. Crews train and respond across wildland firefighting, swift-water and rope-based technical rescue, HazMat operations, and tactical EMS, alongside a busy fire prevention and code enforcement program.

The department's guiding principle, "Prepare. Prevent. Protect," and its stated vision of being "a leader in compassionate, innovative, and community-focused emergency services" run through everything from its Wednesday-night training cycle to its home electrical and car-seat inspection programs. ISO Public Protection Classifications vary across the valley, from Class 4 within Jackson town limits to Class 6 near most outlying stations and Class 10 in the most remote areas, reflecting the scattered, rural nature of the district it protects.
