Department careers page ↗Spokane County Fire District 10 (SCFD10) covers the West Plains area west of the city of Spokane, running five stations and roughly 30 pieces of apparatus to respond to fire, EMS, and hazardous-materials calls. The district was founded in 1949 as an all-volunteer organization and remains primarily staffed by volunteers today, supplemented by career members, giving it a strong "neighbors helping neighbors" identity that traces back to its founding.
The district's boundaries have shifted over time as neighboring cities grew: in 2012 the City of Spokane annexed part of the district's western border while Airway Heights annexed another portion, and SCFD10 maintains mutual-aid relationships with the surrounding communities of Medical Lake, Cheney, and Reardan. Governance is provided by an elected Board of Fire Commissioners, who belong to the Washington Fire Commissioners Association and meet monthly at Station 10-1.
SCFD10 recruits both traditional (neighborhood) volunteer firefighters, who respond directly to their home station, and Support Services volunteers who handle logistics such as driving water tenders, filling air bottles, and firefighter rehabilitation. Career positions are also part of the organization's staffing model, posted on the district's Career Positions page as openings arise.
MissionFire District 10 is dedicated to serving the West Plains by: Protecting life, property, and the environment. Presenting education and prevention information. Providing fire, medical, and emergency services safely. Performing professionally and politely.
SCFD10 is a combination volunteer/career department. As of this review its Career Positions page lists no current openings ("Current Hiring Status: None"), but the district encourages candidates to check back for future career opportunities. The district's primary, continuously open recruiting channel is for volunteer Traditional (Neighborhood/Reserve/Resident) Firefighters and non-firefighting Support Services members, both filled through an inquiry-and-application process rather than a standard job posting.
