Department careers page ↗Pend Oreille County Fire District 2 protects the far-northern corner of Washington's Pend Oreille County, including the towns of Ione, Metaline, and Metaline Falls. Formed in 1967, it has grown from a volunteer outfit into a combination department providing fire protection, emergency medical aid, and hospital transport.
The district covers a large, sparsely populated area — roughly 908 square miles of primary service territory, extending another 517 square miles for advanced life support — and serves over 11,000 people. Crews respond to more than 2,400 emergency calls a year, about 92 percent of them EMS-related.
Operations span fire suppression, technical rescue, EMS, and 24/7/365 Advanced Life Support staffed by paramedics. In 2026 the district annexed neighboring Fire Protection District 4, expanding its coverage to roughly three-quarters of the county.
Missionprotect life and property through its comprehensive fire protection and emergency medical services
The district's main entry path is its Resident Firefighter Program — a two-year, live-in commitment where recruits reside at a Fire District 2 station and train into a full career skill set. It's aimed at newcomers to the fire service: the program provides housing, basic utilities, a food budget, and a monthly stipend while members earn certifications and respond to real calls.
Applicants download the employment application from the website and submit it to the district. Questions go to (509) 442-2311 or pocfire2@pocfd2.org.
