Department careers page ↗Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue traces its roots to 1942, when Silverdale residents organized the area's first fire district. A series of consolidations in 1977, 1989, 1999, and 2003 merged neighboring districts into the agency's present form, giving the district its current name and boundaries.
The district covers roughly 115 square miles of central Kitsap County, serving communities including Silverdale, Seabeck, Illahee, Lake Symington, Lake Tahuyeh, Island Lake, Meadowdale, North Perry, and Chico, plus about 40 miles of tidal waterfront along Hood Canal and several inland lakes. CKFR has been in the midst of a multi-year station rebuilding program: Station 52 (Olympic View) opened in 2023, Stations 45 (North Perry) and 57 (Lake Symington) opened in 2024, and Station 51 (Silverdale) and Station 53 (Seabeck) were underway for 2025, funded in part through a voter-approved fire levy lid lift.
The district provides fire suppression, technical rescue, and emergency medical response, with all CKFR firefighters cross-trained as EMTs. The affiliated nonprofit Central Kitsap Medic One Foundation, established in 1996, supplements the district's EMS capability by funding advanced equipment (video laryngoscopes, mechanical CPR devices, ventilators) and community programs like free CPR/AED and Stop the Bleed training. The district is governed by an elected Board of Fire Commissioners and led by Fire Chief Jay Christian, a 20-plus-year CKFR veteran who was promoted to chief in July 2022.

CKFR posts current openings through a Current Employment Openings link on its Join CKFR page; internal candidates apply for transfers/promotions through the Workforce Ready portal, and the department has run its own Kitsap Fire Academy recruit cohorts (e.g. the 2025 "Wolfpack" academy).
Recruits attend the Kitsap Fire Academy (department referenced its 2025 "Wolfpack" cohort).
When should I call 911?
When you have a fire or medical emergency, or when there is a situation that could, or does, pose a danger to life, property, or both.
Why do fire engines respond to medical calls?
Fire engines provide additional trained personnel for medical emergencies; all CKFR firefighters are cross-trained as EMTs.
Does CKFR bill for ambulance service?
Yes, the district bills for ambulance transport to help offset costs that exceed EMS levy funding; a Financial Assistance Policy can waive bills for qualifying patients based on income.
Can I do a ride-along with CKFR crews?
Yes, community members and students 16 and older can participate in ride-alongs with on-duty crews through the district's ride-along program.
