Department careers page ↗Richmond Fire and Emergency Services is the career fire and rescue agency for the City of Richmond, Virginia's capital. The department traces its roots to 1858 and today staffs 20 fire and rescue stations across the city.
The department protects a diverse urban community of more than 200,000 residents, plus the commuters and visitors who fill the capital each day. Its front-line fleet includes engines, ladder trucks, heavy rescue units, and specialized foam and hazardous materials apparatus.
Beyond structural firefighting and EMS, Richmond maintains three notable specialty capabilities: swiftwater rescue, boat operations, and public safety diving on the James River from Stations 13 and 24; heavy technical rescue (rope, confined space, trench, structural collapse, and heavy extrication) out of Station 10, tied into the Central Virginia Technical Rescue Team; and a hazardous materials response anchored at Station 22 with foam teams at Stations 21 and 8.
