Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (FCFRD) is a combination career and volunteer organization protecting the lives, property, and environment of one of the largest counties in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The department delivers a full range of services: fire suppression, emergency medical care, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, water rescue, life safety education, fire prevention, and arson investigation.
Operations are spread across 39 stations, and the department maintains specialized programs in paramedicine, hazardous materials, technical rescue, marine operations, urban search and rescue, and fire investigation.
Beyond emergency response, FCFRD invests in its community and future workforce through programs such as a Fire Academy, a Girls Fire and Rescue Academy, and a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program.
FCFRD recruits both Firefighter EMTs (no prior experience required, with paid training provided) and Firefighter Paramedics (who must hold NREMT-P and/or VAEMT-P certification). Applications are submitted through the county's career pages on governmentjobs.com, and the department runs a dedicated recruitment portal at JoinFCFRD.org.
The hiring process moves through a written examination, a Physical Abilities Test (PAT), a Personal History Statement, and medical, polygraph, and psychological evaluations.
