Department careers page ↗The Salt Lake City Fire Department serves Utah's capital city from 14 strategically located stations organized into two battalions. It responds to roughly 35,000 calls for service each year, with a focus on urban structural firefighting and emergency medical services.
The department carries an ISO Class 1 certification, the highest possible public protection rating. Its fleet includes engines, trucks, quints, wildland apparatus, and a specialized aircraft rescue fleet stationed at Salt Lake City International Airport.
Beyond structural response, SLCFD fields HazMat, heavy rescue, swift water, and wildland teams, plus a Community Health Access Team (CHAT) that connects residents with public-health resources.
MissionProvide unparalleled fire, rescue, and emergency medical services to our community
SLCFD hires firefighters through a defined annual cycle rather than continuous intake. Applications are submitted through the city's Workday platform during an announced window, followed by the National Testing Network (NTN) FireTEAM written exam and online video interview, a pre-academy physical assessment field day, background investigation and chiefs' interviews, and pre-employment health evaluations.
An EMT or paramedic certification is not required to apply; the department covers basic EMT certification costs for new hires who need it. New firefighters attend a recruit school before being assigned to a station.
