Department careers page ↗The St. George Fire Department has grown from an all-volunteer outfit into a combination department serving one of Utah's fastest-growing cities. Full-time firefighters, captains, and battalion chiefs work rotating 48/96-hour shifts, while reserve firefighters are assigned to the station nearest their home and carry pagers so they can respond and help maintain four-person crews overnight at Stations 1, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. The Fire Chief, Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal, an Administrative Battalion Chief, and an administrative assistant handle day-shift administration, with chief officers on call after hours.
Beyond structure fires, the department responds to EMS calls, hazardous materials incidents, technical rescues, and vehicle extrications within city limits, and also provides mutual aid backup for larger incidents in the surrounding county. It performs fire code compliance inspections and delivers advanced EMT-level emergency medical services. The city carries a PPC (ISO) rating of 3/3X, a strong score achieved by only 37 of 318 surveyed Utah communities, reflecting solid apparatus, staffing, water supply, and community risk-reduction practices — though a handful of outlying neighborhoods more than 7 road miles from a station rate a PPC 10.
MissionThe mission of the St. George Fire Department is to Protect and Preserve life, property, and the environment from fire and disaster, whether it be natural or man-made. We accomplish this through aggressive training, fire prevention and community programs, with a positive attitude towards safety, customer service, and community relations.
St. George Fire Department staffs reserve, part-time, and full-time firefighter positions plus a fire inspector and administrative assistant. Full-time applicants must hold a current Utah or National Registry EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic certification; reserve and part-time firefighters are not required to be EMTs. All reserve and part-time recruits must complete the St. George Firefighter Recruit Academy — about three months of twice-weekly evening sessions plus all-day Saturdays — to earn Firefighter I/II, HazMat Awareness/Operations, and CPR/AED certifications specific to the department, even if they already hold those certifications elsewhere. Applications are held until the next academy class; the department advises against reapplying if you haven't been contacted, and encourages checking application status directly with Human Resources.
