Department careers page ↗Lake Travis Fire Rescue traces its roots to 1963, when Hudson Bend residents obtained surplus U.S. Forest Service equipment after a series of destructive wildfires, leading to the formation of the Hudson Bend Volunteer Fire Department in 1964. The Lakeway Fire Department merged with Hudson Bend in the mid-1970s, and in 1995 the group was formally reorganized as Travis County Emergency Services District No. 6, giving the agency a stable tax-funded budget to professionalize staffing and equipment. The department was rebranded Lake Travis Fire Rescue in 2008.
Today the department operates six fire stations across the Lakeway, Hudson Bend, Bee Cave, Comanche Trail, Steiner Ranch, and Hamilton Pool Road areas of Travis County, with a fifth station added in Steiner Ranch in 2000 and a sixth, Station 606, opening in December 2019 to serve the growing Hamilton Pool region. All stations reached full four-person firefighter staffing by 2015.
LTFR provides fire suppression from three 24/48-hour shifts, marine fire suppression for the lake's marinas and waterfront, technical rescue including vehicle extrication and high-angle/vertical rescue, and basic and advanced life support EMS via engines and quint companies. The department is governed by an elected Board of Commissioners and maintains community programs such as a Junior Firefighter Academy, Explorer post, and an eight-member Honor Guard established in 2015.
