The Portland Fire Department provides fire and emergency services to the city of Portland, Texas, a coastal community on Corpus Christi Bay in San Patricio County. Staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it delivers fire suppression, hazardous-materials response, fire inspections, fire investigations, fire-related building plan review, and public fire-safety education.
The department is led by Fire Chief Jeff Morris. New firefighter candidates must be certified as basic structural firefighters by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection and as EMT-Basics by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Portland hires certified firefighters (Texas structural firefighter + EMT-Basic) and officers such as Assistant Chief / Fire Marshal.
Requirements
- At least 18 years old
- Texas Commission on Fire Protection basic structural firefighter certification
- EMT-Basic certification (Texas Department of State Health Services)
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Texas driver's license (Class B firefighter exemption within 6 months of hire)
- Reside within 45 miles / one hour drive of Portland
