Department careers page ↗The Mission Fire Department is organized into five divisions — Administration, Operations, Fire Prevention, Training, and Communications/Emergency Management — that together cover fire suppression, rescue, hazardous materials response, and emergency medical services for the city. Operations personnel work out of the Central Fire Station and five substations spread across Mission to keep response times low, running a combined fleet of 20 apparatus.
Fire-based EMS is integrated into Operations: cross-trained firefighters staff Mobile Intensive Care Unit ambulances that respond to 911 medical calls, stabilize patients, and transport them to area hospitals. The department also operates a 24-hour Communications Center that takes emergency calls and dispatches units.
The Training Division prepares firefighters as an all-hazards response force, covering firefighting, EMS, weapons-of-mass-destruction/hazmat handling, and specialized rescue disciplines such as confined space, trench, and swift-water rescue, and has set a goal of bringing all firefighters to EMT-Basic certification. The Fire Prevention Division, meanwhile, handles code enforcement, plan review, fire inspections, investigations, and public education aimed at reducing fire and injury risk across the city, which carries an ISO rating of 4 out of 10.
