About Medina County ESD 1

Medina County ESD 1 is one of several Emergency Services Districts serving Medina County, Texas, operating under the authority of the Texas Constitution and Chapter 775 of the Texas Health & Safety Code. As a political subdivision of the state, the district is authorized to levy sales, use, and property taxes to fund fire prevention and control, emergency medical services, and other emergency services for the communities of Castroville, La Coste, Rio Medina, and surrounding unincorporated areas of western Medina County.

The district runs eight fire/EMS stations (Stations 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 20, 40, and 60) under a command staff led by a fire chief and assistant chief, with division chiefs overseeing EMS, support services, and the West and South divisions shared with neighboring ESDs 2, 4, and 6. In February 2023 the district underwent a full ISO/PPC regrade, improving its fire-insurance ratings across its coverage area.
