About Mansfield Fire Rescue

Mansfield Fire Rescue, based in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Mansfield, Texas, protects a growing community of roughly 90,000 residents across more than 36 square miles from five stations, one per fire district. The department responds to more than 9,000 emergency incidents a year through three divisions — Fire Administration & Logistics, Fire & EMS Operations, and Fire Prevention — under Fire Chief Michael Ross.

Every member of the Operations Division is cross-trained as both a firefighter and a licensed paramedic, so the first-arriving engine or quint can begin advanced patient care immediately. Specialized apparatus rounds out the fleet, including a hovercraft at Station 3 and a rescue boat at Station 5 for water and swiftwater response. Staffing runs three 24-hour shifts (A, B, and C) of roughly 25 firefighter/paramedics each, keeping a minimum of 26 personnel on duty around the clock.

The department also engages the community through a Citizens Fire Academy and station tours, and runs a structured Firefighter Selection Process for applicants who already hold Texas paramedic certification.

How to get hired

Because every Mansfield firefighter also works as a licensed paramedic, applicants must already hold (or be eligible for) Texas paramedic certification before applying — the department does not run its own paramedic academy. Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications move through a multistep selection process covering physical agility, oral interviews, a background investigation, polygraph, psychological exam, and a pre-appointment medical exam and drug screen.

PayFirefighter/EMT-P starts at $68,775+ (up to $5,094 available in overtime); Recruit Firefighter (Paramedic) starts at $65,500 until fire-certified; certification, special-assignment, and education incentive pay can add several hundred dollars per month.
