Department careers page ↗Greenville Fire-Rescue traces its lineage to the Dick Hubbard Fire Company, organized in May 1883 after a hotel fire killed 13 people, and formally renamed the Greenville Fire Department in 1910. The department modernized from steam-powered equipment to motorized apparatus in the 1910s, grew to three stations by the 1920s, and evolved its duty schedule over the decades before settling on today's 24-hours-on, 48-hours-off shift structure in 1974.
Today the department operates four fire stations plus a Fire Administration office, staffed by more than 50 personnel working around the clock to protect roughly 28,088 residents and over 1,000 businesses across more than 33 square miles of city limits. Call volume has climbed to about 5,500 responses a year, nearly double what it was a decade ago, and the department extends mutual aid to surrounding Hunt County agencies while participating in the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) and Texas Task Force 2 urban search and rescue.
The department's fleet includes 2019 and 2021 Pierce engines, a ladder truck, a rescue unit, a hazmat truck with trailer, brush units, and a swift-water rescue boat. In December 2021 its ISO Public Protection Classification improved from a Class 3 to a split Class 02/2X rating, which the fire chief noted places Greenville among the top 5% of more than 46,000 rated communities nationwide.
