Denton Fire Department

Denton Fire Department (DFD) traces its roots to 1874 and today fields about 235 sworn personnel and support staff serving a population of approximately 166,000 in Denton, Texas. The department runs an all-hazards operation spanning fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, and technical rescue, and is on pace for over 24,000 calls in 2025.

DFD earned an ISO Class 1 Public Protection Classification effective October 2025, placing it among the top 1% of fire agencies nationwide. It also holds Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) accredited status and a perfect-score Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAAS) accreditation.

The department continues to grow and modernize, having recently opened Fire Station 9, added Texas' first electric fire truck to its fleet, and undertaken renovations at Stations 5 and 6.

Denton is a Texas Local Government Code Chapter 143 civil service city, so firefighter hiring runs through a merit-based civil service process. Candidates take a written Fire Civil Service Exam, then move through a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical agility test. The next Fire Civil Service Exam is expected in 2026 at a date and location yet to be determined. Prospective applicants are encouraged to sign up for the department's waiting list to be notified of employment opportunities and future exams.
