The Deer Park Volunteer Fire Department has protected Deer Park, Texas since 1950, when 11 charter members organized around a single fire engine and a one-bay station. Today the department covers roughly 17 square miles of southeast Harris County — the city of Deer Park plus its industrial district, home to some of the largest petrochemical producers along the Houston Ship Channel — serving more than 33,000 residents and responding to about 3,000 emergency calls a year.
Fire and EMS crews operate out of three stations across the city. The fleet includes a pumper, two combination rescue-pumpers, two ladder trucks, a heavy rescue, two brush trucks, and four ambulances, backed by five first-responder vehicles. Suppression is handled by more than 70 volunteer firefighters, while ambulances are staffed by a combination of paramedics employed by the City of Deer Park — 18 full-time, including two captains, plus six part-time — and 28 volunteer medics certified from EMT through paramedic.
Every member graduates an SFFMA-approved training academy of no less than 80 hours before responding to calls, with instruction delivered by SFFMA-certified members at the department's own Don H. Davis Training Facility; members also train with TEEX and the National Fire Academy. The department's Fire Prevention Bureau teaches fire safety to more than 3,500 elementary students each year, and community programs include the annual Gift of Christmas assistance effort (helping over 100 families) and the Shattered Dreams awareness program run with the Deer Park school district.
The department accepts volunteer membership applications year-round through an online form on the city website. New fire-side members attend a 14-week academy combining classroom and hands-on training in building construction, search and rescue, and suppression; already-certified EMTs instead enter a six-month mentorship program that applies their training to the department's medical protocols in the field.
