About Atascocita Fire Department

Atascocita Fire Department got its start in 1978, when it was incorporated in the State of Texas as a volunteer fire department serving the fast-growing Atascocita community northeast of Houston. For nearly four decades the department relied primarily on volunteer staffing before transitioning in 2017 to a combination model, adding around-the-clock paid personnel to crew engines and ambulances alongside its volunteer members.

Today AFD operates out of three 24/7 fire stations (Stations 19, 29, and 39) plus a Headquarters/Training Center, with a fleet that includes four MICU-level ambulances, three fire engines, and a ladder truck. The department also purchased and renovated a dedicated fleet maintenance facility in 2020. AFD answers more than 8,000 calls a year across its coverage area, which runs from the West Fork of the San Jacinto River in the north to Lake Houston in the east, the City of Humble to the west, and the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the south.

Beyond emergency response, the department runs fire prevention and public education programs, visits area schools, and maintains a Personnel Assisting Logistical Support (P.A.L.S.) rehab program for responders. It operates under Harris County Emergency Services District No. 46 (ESD 46), which provides governmental oversight and transparency reporting for the district.

Frequently asked questions

What are the requirements to become a firefighter at AFD?

Applicants must complete the Fire Fighter Recruit Class (unless already experienced), maintain a minimum of two 12-hour shifts monthly, and live within reasonable commuting distance. Working additional shifts may qualify members for stipends.

Can non-residents of Atascocita join the department?

Yes. The department welcomes volunteers from outside Atascocita since all volunteers are required to ride on a duty crew at the station regardless of where they live.

Is Atascocita Fire Department paid or volunteer?

Both. The department has been staffed by volunteers since 1978 and now supplements them with paid personnel staffing ambulances and fire engines around the clock.

Should I drive to a fire station during a medical emergency?

No. Residents are told to dial 911 rather than drive to a station, since waiting for an ambulance to return from a station is slower than calling for one directly.

Does AFD offer community CPR classes or car seat installation?

Yes to both. CPR and community education classes are offered (registration via Eventbrite), and car seat installations are available by appointment by calling (281) 852-2181.
