About City Of Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD)

Murfreesboro Fire Rescue Department (MFRD) protects the city of Murfreesboro in Middle Tennessee. The department operates 11 fully staffed fire stations plus an administration building, logistics and supply facility, and the Doug Young Public Safety Training Center.

MFRD is organized into five divisions: Administration, the Fire Marshal's Office, Fire Suppression and Emergency Response, a Medical Division, and Training. Together they cover 24-hour emergency response, fire prevention and inspections, EMS, and community education programs.

The department pairs firefighting with a strong medical focus, requiring firefighters to advance to Tennessee AEMT licensure, and runs community-facing offerings such as a Citizens Fire Academy, Teen Fire Academy, and a smoke alarm installation program.

How to get hired

Murfreesboro Fire Rescue accepts firefighter applications on an as-needed basis, hiring both non-certified candidates and certified lateral personnel. There are separate applications for paramedics and non-paramedics. Candidates must pass a Physical Assessment Test (PAT) before sitting for the written examination, then interview with a panel of department members and HR staff before being placed on a ranked eligibility list.

New hires attend a 14-week basic fire training academy, plus a 2-week Tennessee EMR course if not already certified. Certification expectations progress over the first three years, culminating in Tennessee AEMT licensure within 36 months of hire.
