Department careers page ↗Chambersburg Fire Department's lineage runs back to March 31, 1780, when Friendship Engine and Hose Company No. 1 organized under the name United Fire Company, making it one of the oldest fire organizations in the country. What began as a bucket brigade grew over the following century into a fleet of steam and hand-operated engines, and the department eventually grew to encompass five historic companies -- Friendship No. 1, Junior Hose and Truck No. 2, Good Will No. 3, Franklin No. 4, and Cumberland Valley Hose No. 5 -- before consolidating into today's centralized operation.
Today CFD runs from two stations, its Headquarters at 130 North Second Street and the McKinley Street station, fielding engines, an aerial tower, ambulances, and command and support vehicles to deliver fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous materials response, EMS, and fire prevention services to the Borough. The department blends career, part-time, and volunteer firefighter/EMTs, and organizes its culture around four core values: Character, Honor, Respect, and Motivation.
