About City Of Oxford Fire Department

The City of Oxford Fire Department has served southwest Ohio since 1833. Operating from 217 South Elm Street, it provides fire suppression and advanced life support (paramedic-level) ambulance transport for the City of Oxford, the Miami University campus, Oxford Township, College Corner Village, and western Milford Township.

The department is a blended organization: full-time firefighter/paramedics work 24-hour shifts (every third day), and are backed by a large roster of part-time firefighter/paramedics and EMTs plus a Student EMT corps drawn from Miami University. Combined, the staff answers about 3,300 calls annually.

Beyond emergency response, the department handles fire code enforcement and inspections, fire and life-safety plan review, fire investigations, pre-fire planning, and public education, and runs community programs such as CPR/AED certification and 'Stop the Bleed' training.

How to get hired

Oxford hires full-time and part-time firefighter/paramedics and EMTs, and applications are handled through the City's GovernmentJobs portal (governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofoxford). Candidates face a thorough screening that includes a background investigation, polygraph examination, and medical evaluation, along with checks of driving record and substance-abuse history.

A distinctive entry path is the Student EMT Program: Miami University students holding an Ohio EMT certification (or higher) can serve on-station and on-call during the academic year for paid on-call compensation, with a limited number of slots reserved for first- and second-year students.

Frequently asked questions

How do I apply to the Oxford Fire Department?

Positions are posted and applications are submitted through the City of Oxford's GovernmentJobs portal at governmentjobs.com/careers/cityofoxford.

What is the hiring/screening process?

After applying, candidates go through a background investigation, a polygraph examination, and a medical evaluation. The department also reviews driving records and substance-abuse history.

What would automatically disqualify me?

Felony convictions, domestic violence arrests, misdemeanors involving moral turpitude, multiple OMVI arrests, or recent illegal drug use (within roughly the past three years) are disqualifying.

What schedule do full-time firefighters work?

Full-time members work 24-hour shifts, coming on duty every third day starting at 7 AM.

Is there a way for college students to get involved?

Yes. The Student EMT Program is open to Miami University students who hold an Ohio EMT (or higher) certification. Participants commit about 24 hours per month of on-station, on-call time during the fall and spring semesters plus monthly training, and are paid on-call for EMS incidents and training. Slots are limited (max 12, about 3 per class), with first- and second-year students prioritized.

Does the department do EMS transport?

Yes. Oxford operates advanced life support (paramedic) ambulance services in addition to fire suppression, and staff are firefighter/paramedics and EMTs.
