About Dickinson Fire Department

Founded in July 1891 as the Dickinson Hose Company, the Dickinson Fire Department protects the western North Dakota city of Dickinson with more than 125 years of continuous service. It is organized into three divisions: Administration, the Fire Division, and the Fire Prevention Bureau.

Dickinson operates as a combination department, staffed by both full-time (career) and part-time firefighters, alongside state-certified members, six reserve members, and a department chaplain. Full-time roles range from Firefighter and Lieutenant up through Captain, Deputy Chief, and Fire Chief, while part-time members serve as firefighters and officers up to Assistant Chief.

Beyond structure fires, crews respond to hazardous materials incidents, emergency medical calls, auto extrication, confined space and trench rescue, and high-angle rope rescue. The department is also one of eight in North Dakota tasked with regional response.

Following a 2017 ISO survey and subsequent additions of a second station, an aerial apparatus, and more full-time staff, the city's Public Protection Classification improved from Class 4 to Class 3.

How to get hired

Part-time members respond first to the station and then to the scene, while full-time personnel can respond directly from the initial page for faster scene size-up.
