Iredell County Rescue Squad & Fire, Inc. is an independent combination emergency services agency based at 1902 Wilkesboro Hwy in Statesville, North Carolina, with volunteer and paid staff working alongside each other. Its district covers about 245 square miles of Iredell County and an estimated 67,000 residents, reaching the Alexander, Davie, and Rowan county lines and bounded by the Catawba River. That territory takes in all or part of 10 fire districts, the county's largest share of interstate highway — 21 miles of I-40 (mile markers 141–162) and 13 miles of I-77 (mile markers 46–59) — and Statesville Regional Airport.
The squad is certified by the North Carolina Association of Rescue & EMS in heavy, medium, and light rescue, high- and low-angle rope rescue, surface water and swiftwater rescue, confined space rescue, machine and agricultural rescue, and wilderness land search and rescue. On the medical side it staffs ALS-certified ambulances with providers ranging from EMT-Basic to Paramedic, responds to traffic accidents across the district, and provides fully staffed standby ambulances for events from football games to rodeos.
In 2025 the squad handled 8,270 incidents — 6,889 medical calls and 1,381 rescue calls. Its fleet includes three rescue trucks, medic units, squad support units, and an ISAR command unit, including a 15.6-foot Zodiac rescue boat with a 40-hp jet-propulsion motor.
MissionThe primary mission of Iredell County Rescue Squad & Fire, Inc. is to deliver a high standard of emergency response and endeavor in saving lives fueled by specialized rescue training, operations and medical care.
The squad accepts applications for both part-time paid staff and volunteer members (announced May 2026). Part-time candidates with technical rescue, EMT, EMR, or firefighter credentials are evaluated on their mix of experience and certifications, with pay based on experience; paid staff work 12-hour shifts running 6 a.m.–6 p.m. and 6 p.m.–6 a.m. Volunteers serve on a schedule that flexes with their availability but must maintain membership standards for call participation, training, and agency involvement.

How does the Iredell County Rescue Squad work with Iredell County EMS?
The squad's ALS-certified ambulances serve as the only ALS backup ambulances for Iredell County EMS when all county units are committed to calls. Its crews provide full transport capability and also staff rehab units at structure fires in support of surrounding fire departments.
Does the Iredell County Rescue Squad have a search and rescue team?
Yes. The squad fields a wilderness land search and rescue team (ISAR) with K9 search dogs, commanded by Bill Nesslar. Wilderness land search is one of the disciplines the squad is certified in through the North Carolina Association of Rescue & EMS.
