Canaan Fire Rescue Department is an all-volunteer, on-call agency serving the Town of Canaan, New Hampshire, along with contracted coverage for the Town of Orange and part of Dorchester. It also provides mutual aid to surrounding Upper Valley communities.
The roster runs more than 50 members, including two chiefs, three captains, two lieutenants, and a mix of firefighters, paramedics, AEMTs, and EMTs. The department runs two engines, a heavy rescue with a cascade system, a rescue boat, and UTVs for off-road response.
Call volume has climbed sharply, from 524 responses in 2024 to 1,052 in 2025. The department handles structure fires, vehicle extrication, water and wilderness rescue, EMS assistance, and hazmat response, and members train continuously through local, state, and out-of-state programs.
A youth cadet program partners with Mascoma Valley Regional High School to bring on members ages 16 to 18, who train and respond to calls under supervision. Ambulance transport is handled by the separately incorporated Canaan F.A.S.T. Inc.
Canaan Fire Rescue actively welcomes new volunteer, on-call members and accepts applications on a rolling basis. Members receive training and can serve as firefighters, EMTs, AEMTs, or paramedics; no prior certification is required to begin, as the department supports ongoing training.
