Department careers page ↗Storey County Fire Protection District traces its roots back to 1861, making it the longest continuously operating fire service in the state of Nevada. What began as a firefighting outfit for the boomtown of Virginia City has grown into a modern district covering roughly 264 square miles of Storey County, including Virginia City, Gold Hill, Mark Twain, the Virginia City Highlands, Lockwood, and the rapidly industrializing Tahoe Reno Industrial Center (TRIC).
The district blends its 19th-century heritage with contemporary emergency response capability, delivering structural fire suppression, advanced EMS, hazardous materials mitigation, technical rescue, and wildland firefighting across a rural, high-terrain service area. Fire prevention and community risk reduction are also central to the district's work, including code enforcement, inspections, a smoke detector program, and car seat safety checks.
Organizationally the district is led by a fire chief supported by battalion chiefs and a fire marshal's office, with dedicated staff for fleet maintenance, fuels management, and fire prevention inspection alongside its uniformed suppression and EMS personnel.
MissionBe Nice. Solve Problems. Serve Community.
The district posts current openings through Storey County's GovernmentJobs.com career portal and also maintains a volunteer firefighter program and training-opportunities pathway for interested candidates.
