About Billings Fire Department

Billings Fire Department protects the Billings Urban Fire Service Area (BUFSA), covering residents, businesses, and organizations across Montana's largest city. Founded in 1883, it is a full-service career department.

The department employs about 141 total staff, including 127 line personnel (firefighters, EMTs, and paramedics), administrative staff, and fire inspectors, operating out of eight fire stations. It also oversees a 911 Communications Center staffed by 37 employees.

Beyond core fire suppression and emergency medical services, the department runs a Fire Prevention Bureau focused on code enforcement, investigations, and community risk reduction, and supports specialty efforts such as a SWAT Medic program, a UAS/drone program, and hazardous materials response.
