Department careers page ↗Southern Platte Fire Protection District traces its roots to 1901, when the community of Parkville (then English Landing) organized its first volunteer fire brigade under Chief Lewis R. Barker. What began as a horse-drawn, all-volunteer operation grew alongside Platte County, adding rescue and emergency medical response in the 1970s before residents voted in 1976 to establish the modern Southern Platte Fire Protection District, governed by an elected three-member board that appoints the fire chief.
Today the District covers about 76 square miles across five cities and villages in Platte County just northwest of Kansas City, protecting an estimated 37,000 residents from four fire stations, three of which are staffed around the clock. A career staff of 36 full-time firefighter/EMTs works alongside the District's governance structure to deliver fire suppression, EMS response, technical rescue, and hazardous materials mitigation, continuing a service model that professionalized with its first paid chief in 1993 and its first paid firefighters in 1996.
