About Johnson County Fire Protection District

Johnson County Fire Protection District was formed when voters approved consolidating four existing departments -- the Johnson County Fire Department, Chilhowee Volunteer Fire Department, Leeton Volunteer Fire Department, and Rural Knob Noster Volunteer Fire Department -- into a single tax-based district that became official in January 1979. William P. Parsons served as the first County Fire Chief until his retirement in 1995, building the district from roughly eight apparatus and twenty to thirty firefighters into its current size.

Today the district covers the eastern two-thirds of Johnson County (excluding the cities of Warrensburg and Knob Noster themselves) from 12 stations located in or near Warrensburg, Leeton, Chilhowee, Knob Noster, Centerview, Burtville, Columbus, Cornelia, Fayetteville, and Valley City. The district runs 54 pieces of apparatus and responds to fire suppression, motor-vehicle-accident rescue, and water rescue calls (the latter through Station 11), relying primarily on a corps of about 140 volunteers.

In April 2019 the district added its first full-time daytime firefighting positions -- one Captain and two Firefighters -- to supplement volunteer response during weekday business hours, alongside the district's full-time Fire Chief and Assistant Fire Chief.
