Department careers page ↗Vicksburg Fire Department traces its roots to April 1837, when the city's first fire company was organized, and became a fully paid fire service by 1902 -- the first in Mississippi to do so. Today the department protects the city with more than 110 firefighters and emergency medical personnel operating out of seven fire stations.
The department has also long been a leader in fire-based EMS: in May 1969 it stood up the Vicksburg Warren Ambulance Service, becoming the first city fire department in Mississippi to run an ambulance service, and it remains one of only three fire department-run ambulance services in the state. In October 2018, the department reached a major milestone by improving its ISO fire rating to Class 4.
