About Shakopee Fire Department

The Shakopee Fire Department was established in 1883 and provides fire suppression, emergency medical, and rescue services to the City of Shakopee and the neighboring Jackson and Louisville Townships in the southwest Twin Cities metro. It operates from two fire stations with a modern fleet of engines, ladders, and specialized rescue equipment.

The department runs a combination staffing model of roughly 30 full-time and 14 part-time members, including a fire chief, two deputy chiefs, a fire marshal, three battalion chiefs, six captains, a fire inspector, and career and part-time firefighters. All firefighters are certified to the Firefighter II level by the Minnesota Fire Service Certification Board and trained as Emergency Medical Technicians.

Demand has grown sharply, with annual call volume more than doubling from 910 calls in 2018 to 1,938 in 2024. In response, the department is adding full-time staffing and moving toward 24/7 coverage from both stations.

How to get hired

Firefighter and officer openings are posted through the City of Shakopee's careers portal on GovernmentJobs. These positions enable full-time staffing at Fire Station 2 for the first time and around-the-clock coverage from both stations. FEMA covers 75% of salary and benefit costs in the first two years and 35% in the third year, after which the City fully funds the positions permanently.
