Department careers page ↗Waterford Township Fire Department began in 1941 with a single fire truck run out of a small room in the town hall by a handful of township citizens. Today it describes itself as one of the most progressive, best-equipped and technologically advanced fire departments in Michigan, and the largest staffed fire department in Oakland County.
The department protects roughly 60 square miles of suburban residential, lakefront, industrial and retail property. Beyond Waterford Township it also serves the City of Lake Angelus (since 2000) and the City of Pontiac (since February 2012). Its coverage area includes Oakland County International Airport, the Oakland County Jail, CN Railroad lines, state parks and public beaches.
Staffing runs deep: 107 full-time firefighters, of whom 105 are licensed paramedics, working out of nine 24-hour staffed fire stations. The apparatus fleet includes 10 engines, eight Advanced Life Support rescue units, two 100-foot aerial ladder trucks, a 75-foot quint, and two mobile command vehicles.
The department is nearly all-paramedic and provides its own Advanced Life Support EMS, along with a Technical Rescue Unit and a HazMat team.
Waterford hires career firefighter/paramedics, and given that nearly every member is a licensed paramedic, EMS credentials are central to the department's staffing model. Firefighter and paramedic openings are posted under the "Police & Fire" category on the township's jobs page, and candidates can subscribe to the site's Notify Me alerts to be told when positions open.
The department also runs an EMS Academy and a Cadet Program as pipelines into the fire service. At the time of review no firefighter or paramedic positions were posted.
The department operates its own EMS Academy and a Cadet Program as entry pathways into the fire service.
